Insurance gap could be expensive
December 2007
Anyone planning a gap year or an extended holiday has been warned that medical bills could leave them seriously out of pocket if they fail to take out proper insurance.
The online information resource, noted that air ambulances and other costs can run into tens of thousands of pounds.
This means that getting injured on a jungle trek or halfway up a mountain could result in a massive bill that in the case of some gap year students leave parents picking up the tab.
"It's very easy to rack up a bill of £50,000, and at some point, with the travel and backpacker market growing and more people travelling without insurance, someone will lose their home, or they'll have to remortgage and lose their life savings," said Tom Griffiths.
"The highest ever medical bill was about £1.2 million."
Travel insurance is often overlooked when people take short breaks and while providers would say that all trips should be covered, longer holidays and those involving adventure activities are especially important.
